about

Early in 2023 we learned that Swallow Hill Music’s Sawtelle Recording Studio was closing. Our friend Brian Hunter was the chief sound engineer there and he’s worked closely with us on all of our recorded material so we wanted to snag a final session just to get in the booth one last time.

This all happened quickly without a lot of time to plan, so we picked some tunes that were in our set that we hadn't recorded yet, and one of those was “True Vine.” Olivia was able to join me at Sawtelle and we laid down the basic tracks, and we really liked the unadorned feel of things.

It just so happened that the next day Brian had time open at the other studio he runs - The Mouse Trap - so we started things at Sawtelle and wrapped things up there. We're working on full band versions of a few tunes, including this one, but I wanted to release “True Vine” as a fiddle and banjo because I just love how it turned out with just the two instruments and the two voices. It has the right old time feel.

Liv and I sometimes do these fiddle and banjo duo gigs. That goes back to 2021 when live music was coming back. Some venues weren't ready to take a four-piece band, but they would take a solo or a duo act, so we’d do Distance Walk (or Olibarry) as a duo and we still do that a handful of times a year and lean into the smaller setup.

Beyond that, there's something about the fiddle and banjo sound that really comes out in this song. So count it as a blessing and we hope you enjoy it. Thanks. Barry

lyrics

You and I are not from the true vine
Count it as a blessing, count it as a blessing
The sun don't shine on them like it beats on us
Count it as a blessing, count it as a blessing

Oh holy man oh lowly man
I sometimes forget where I stand
Oh holy man oh lowly man

If you and I are mistaken for fools
It might be a blessing, it might be a blessing
Tales they win, heads they win again
It might be a blessing, it might be a blessing

Oh holy man or lowly man
I sometimes forget where you stand
Oh holy man or lowly man

So you and I are not from the true vine
Count it as a blessing, count it as a blessing
The sun don't shine on them like it does for us
Count it as a blessing, count it as a blessing

Oh holy man oh lowly
Oh holy man oh lowly
Oh holy man oh lowly
Oh holy man or lowly man
